Best Photo Editing Apps

Photo editing used to be reserved for the desktop computer not too long ago and even today many professional photographers would frown upon the idea of producing finished work on a mobile phone.  However, in 2020 there is a smorgasbord of photo apps available for your mobile phone, android or iphone, including some free photo editing apps, and with a myriad of picture editing capabilities that are only getting better as time goes on.  Which of these picture editing apps are the best editing apps is entirely subjective depending on user preference, need and compatibility with your operating system, Android or iOS.  There are photo apps for only iPhone and some picture apps are only for Android, but most are for both.

Photo Editor App Review Criteria

Our approach to reviewing the best photo apps was to look at a few factors that haven’t been touched upon by other authors to add some additional value to the online content around editing apps. We decided to look at 3 key factors in our analysis of ‘what is the best photo editing app’.

  1. The first was their store rating & use.  By looking here first we can reduce the list to those deserving of review without inserting any bias.  The best editing apps will be the ones used the most, as judged by the people using them.  So that’s a no brainer.
  2. The second factor is trend. We look at google trends around the brand name or app over a 5 year time frame, so we can see the big picture.
  3. The third key factor in the analysis was a quick organic brand review to see how many people search their brand name or app name each month.  This again tell us straight numbers, with no subjective opinion.

These factors combined will help a user quickly see which apps are used the most by users, which have the best reviews and what if any trend activity or unique value such as community can be added into the decision. And now, without further ado.

Ranking Photo Apps for Android and iOS (iPhone)

The following list is a curated list of all good editing apps that offer something of benefit.  Some offer specific picture editing options while other picture apps offer the kitchen sink in editing capabilities.  The rating below is based on the Store Rating Average between Google and Apple stores for each app.  To make the final list the app had to have at least a 4.4 rating or 1mil+ reviews or votes combined.  The list was itemized according to their result of multiplying Rating x Reviews/Votes.  The trend strength is based on Google trends and the Organic brand is based on keyword volume searched of their brand per month on desktop and only on Google.  Let us know in the comments below if you think we should add any other photo editing apps to the list that meet the criteria.
